I don’t mean leave your organization, resign and start your business. I am opined that we all can’t be entrepreneurs; who will work at my organization if you all become entrepreneurs? That’s meant to be joke though I am fully persuaded we all won’t be CEO’s. Being the boss of you like I meant it is having a better handle on your life, making better choices and ultimately living a productive, confident and rewarding life.
Some people seem to achieve so much while others struggle to accomplish their goals in the same given environment and circumstances, it’s all about personal effectiveness and having a solid grip of one’s life and that to me is being the boss!
For every task and activities ask yourself critical questions like
Do I have to do this?
What happens if I don’t? Would I suffer any loss if I don’t?
What can I be doing now that would yield better returns?
What is the best use of my time now? Remember, if you don’t set your priorities, you would be working to achieve someone else’s priorities.
An average person shockingly knows little about himself or his personality make-up. Self awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, and this separates low performers from high performers, you should be aware of yourself, your problem solving styles, your personal values, your conflict management and natural defence mechanisms.
Another good thing to note is your body clock, its effect on your energy level and alertness. Understanding this enables you to optimize your peak periods. Your Peak Productivity Time might be totally different from your colleagues and there are good chances that you have an intuition about your Peak Productivity Time if you surf through your past experiences.
Do you prefer 8:00 AM meetings because you are alert? Is the afternoon a great time to bang out a few assignments, or is it a great time for a nap? Do you find that you do your best work after everyone has gone to bed? Different strokes for different people.
Fix your meetings to your dull moments and reserve your peak moments to much more productive activities. Turn off social media notifications if you have to, do whatever you can to get the job done and minimise distractions.
And don’t forget to motivate yourself, motivation doesn’t last forever, you may need daily dosage to be the boss.
