Tafari Campbell, a personal chef who had been working for former President Barack Obama, tragically lost his life in a pond near the Obamas’ residence on Martha’s Vineyard on Monday morning.
The 43-year-old chef had been enjoying a paddle boarding session on Sunday evening when he suddenly disappeared beneath the water. Despite launching an extensive search and rescue effort, Campbell’s body was not located until the following morning.
Massachusetts State Police divers successfully recovered his body from Edgartown Great Pond at around 10 a.m. Eastern time. The discovery was made approximately 100 feet from the shore, submerged at a depth of about eight feet.
A native of Martha’s Vineyard, Campbell had been working as a dedicated chef for the Obamas for several years. He was highly regarded for his culinary expertise and his unwavering commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
In response to the devastating news, the Obamas issued a heartfelt statement extending their deepest condolences to Campbell’s family and friends. They expressed that Tafari had become an integral part of their family, starting as a talented sous chef at the White House and remaining a cherished presence in their lives ever since. The former first family, however, was not present at their residence during the time of the accident.
As of now, the cause of Tafari Campbell’s untimely death is still under investigation. Authorities, however, have not found any indications of foul play. The loss of this truly wonderful man has left everyone who knew and loved him, particularly his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin, grieving deeply.
