The eighth edition of the Pride Women Conference under the theme “I Survived: Surmounting Assault and Abuse” is set to hold on Friday, May 3, 2024 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos. The event, which gathers women from all walks of life, has a line-up of seasoned speakers to share their life experiences and knowledge.
The convener, Ijeoma Anyiam-Osigwe, initiated the Pride Women Conference to help the modern woman, her family, and society achieve emotional wellbeing. The theme of this year on surviving assault and abuse seeks to highlight the immense strength and resilience of women and their unique journeys.
It is very common for an assault or abuse to leave one with strong emotions. Everyone reacts differently, and a range of emotions are all natural responses to trauma. Each survivor’s story is unique, yet they all share the common denominator of courage and determination to heal and move forward.
The journey of survival often involves confronting deep-seated pain, facing complex emotions, and rebuilding shattered trust. It is a process that requires patience, self-compassion, and a supportive network of friends, family, and professionals.
Therapy and counselling, which play important roles in the healing journey, provide tools and strategies to cope with trauma, manage triggers, and cultivate self-care practices. Hence, survivors can learn to reclaim their sense of agency, rebuild boundaries, and rediscover their worth and dignity.
Barrister Toyin Ndidi Taiwo-Ojo, Legal Practitioner & Founder of Stop the Abuse against Children and Women Foundation, who is the chairperson will be giving the keynote address.
