My child you have just graduated from University. I am so happy and proud of you. You have given your mother and I great joy. Not only have you qualified, you came top of the class. However, I want to advice you on an attitude which I think will serve you very well as you begin your working life.
Life is about service. Mother Teresa put it aptly “A life not lived for others is not a life.”
I believe every profession involves some form of service. Every professional, be it writers, artists, teachers, singers, publishers, doctors, factory workers, farmers, scientists, nurses, dancers, professors, managers, lawyers, waiters, drivers, office messengers, cleaners, cooks, pilots, soldiers, policemen, stay at home mothers, politicians, and so many innumerable to name, all serve humanity in some way, at some level and are served at another level.
So my child, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” – Ecclesiastes 9:10
Service is a way to attain love, peace and meaning. Through her life’s work, Mother Teresa taught us that service takes on a deeper meaning when we serve those in greater need than us.
Therefore, we first must acknowledge the blessings and opportunities bestowed upon us that we can render service. We need to realize that the ones we serve are yet to receive the same blessings and opportunities. And for that, always serve with a smile.
Take to heart these sayings of Mother Teresa:
Peace begins with a smile.”
“Smile at each other. Smile at your wife, smile at your husband, smile at your children, smile at each other- it doesn’t matter who it is- and that will help to grow up in greater love for each other.
