My name is Bimbola. That’s what I liked to be called, I seem not to like surnames as I have noticed that I keep forgetting to add my surname even on bank tellers, but since you’ll be asking like most people do- I’m Bimbola, Bimbola Segun-Amao. The newsroom of Somali’s Radio Shabelle has virtually become a battlefield as its journalists are caught in the cross fire of government security forces and their rival El- Shabab fighters. In a recent fourth government move against Radio Shabelle, 20 staff were arrested and its equipment seized for “negative broadcasts about…

What is it that makes almost every politician so self-conceited as to think that he or she is a presidential material? The Tunisian Election Commission must have asked itself this question as it pruned down the list of 70 candidates to a still-large field of 27 for its presidential election next month? Of course it is human nature to swing from one extreme to the other and is therefore to be expected that Tunisia, the country that set in motion the Arab Spring that liberated it from crass dictatorship should adopt permissive democratization. “We have accepted officially 27 candidates in…

Former Kenyan spy chief, Major-General Michael Gichangi, may not have retired voluntarily in September as many believed. Indications are that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto hold him responsible for their embarrassing indictment before the International Criminal Court. As head of the National Intelligence Service under Kenyatta’s predecessor Kibabaki, Gichangi expectedly played a big role in compiling the then Finance Minister Kenyatta’s alleged involvement crimes against humanity and the submission of the Kenyatta/Ruto indictment first to the local Waki Commission and subsequently to the ICC. Kenyatta aides believe Gichangi and some senior bosses in NIS and some high…
