Emma Glennon, University of Cambridge and Freya Jephcott, University of Cambridge The best defence against Ebola outbreaks is early detection. If detected early enough, an outbreak can be prevented with targeted, low-tech interventions, such as isolating infected people and their contacts. But our research suggests that most opportunities for early detection and intervention are missed. In fact, we estimate that most times when Ebola jumps from wildlife to people, it is not detected at all. Every Ebola outbreak starts with a “spillover event,” where a person becomes infected from an animal – a fruit bat, for example. From there, people…

L.F. Carver, Queen’s University, Ontario How old do you feel inside? Not your chronological age (that pesky number on your birthday cake) but how old is the real you, the person inside? In North America, we generally group people into socially constructed age ranges such as: childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and old age. Age categories are associated with different rights and privileges and, attached to these age categories are behavioural expectations. For example, old people are expected to be frail and helpless. However, research has shown that, on the inside, most people’s subjective age — the way they…
It is often said that people deserve the leaders they get. In a conversation bewailing the current situation of the country, you’re likely to hear multiple references pointing towards our poor governance and corruption-imbibed political structure and rarely do you see accusing fingers pointing to the common man as a huge part of the problem. Recently a tweet caught my attention. See below. No wonder we now have NIGERIAN YOUTHS & KIDS suffering Organ failure & Cancer “Yesterday, scientists under the umbrella of the Nigerian Food Sciences and Technology Institute went to inspect markets in Abuja (Utako and Garki Markets).…
Oludayo Tade, University of Ibadan The international trafficking of children has received much attention in recent times. But, little attention has been paid to how it plays out and its unique dynamics in Nigeria. Child trafficking is one of the most flourishing organised criminal enterprises in Nigeria. In Oyo State alone (Nigeria has 36 states and a federal capital), the Nigerian Immigration Service rescued 464 trafficked children and arrested 101 traffickers and 120 end-users between 2016 and this year. Nigeria is a source, transit spot and destination for human trafficking. Close to 1.4 million Nigerians live in slave-like conditions. An…
Gary W. Lewandowski Jr., Monmouth University One person fills two roles. Being someone’s BFF is a big deal – you don’t hand over the other half of your “Best Friends” necklace to just anyone. Having a romantic partner who is also your best friend potentially sounds perfect. With your BFF as your romantic partner, you get the best of both worlds, someone with whom you can laugh, share your life and cuddle. When you look at seemingly happy celebrity couples like Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, or Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow, not only do they appear to be in…
My Dear Daughter, When St. Paul advised in his Letter to the Thessalonians: “Give thanks in every circumstance,..” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 he was passing on a very sound advice on how one should live his or her life with a positive point of view and not seeing things from a negative perspective. St. Paul was telling the Thessalonians that they should step forward with sincere gratitude, no matter what goes on in their life. This was good advice then and it is the same today. No matter how many curve balls life throws at you, you just have to give…

Jerry Davis, University of Michigan Target recently staked out a position in the culture wars by announcing that it will build private bathrooms in all its locations, after earlier allowing transgender customers to use whichever room corresponds with their gender identity – both actions sparking anger from many conservatives. While big business hasn’t always been on the vanguard of social justice, in recent years companies like Target, Apple and even Wal-Mart have increasingly taken positions that put them squarely on the side of socially progressive activists. So how did Che Guevera – the face of the Cuban Revolution – become…
