The British Urban Film Festival (BUFF) was launched in July 2005, and since then the Festival has grown to be an important film festival for independent filmmakers in the UK. Many of the UK’s leading actors and actresses have starred, written, produced and directed films shown at the British Urban Film Festival including Chiwetel Ejiofor (‘Slapper’), Sadie Frost (Fortune’s Smile), Clint Dyer (‘SUS’), Ashley Walters (‘Showdown’) and Noel Clarke (‘Adulthood’ & ‘Huge’). Equally, a large number of entries have come from outside the UK including Israel, France, Nigeria, Brazil, Poland, Turkey and the United States – filmmakers who are just as attracted to be associated with this annual showpiece event. In January 2013 The British Urban Film Festival (in conjunction with Community Channel) became the first film festival in the UK to have its film selections featured for broadcast on the BBC i-player, one of the UK’s biggest video on-demand platforms. Later this year, Channel 4 will be broadcasting film selections curated by the festival.
As a publisher-broadcaster platform, BUFF functions to celebrate difference and to champion, embrace, disrupt and accurately reflect the changing cultural mass and demographic make-up of the UK as expressed primarily through the showcasing and coverage of urban independent film.
The 2014 British Urban Film Festival is set for 4-8 September. The festival will host up to 25 films (90% as UK premieres), Live Q&A’s with actors and directors plus live script readings and industry panel debates. Now in its 9th year, the British Urban Film Festival will host numerous events starting off at Channel 4 headquarters and then across 5 days in the West End and East End of London.
