A pregnant woman struck dead by a falling tree in Hong Kong was later delivered of her baby in Hospital.
The tree struck the woman, knocking her unconscious, at around 0630GM in the the town’s wealthy middle class neighbourhood, according to media reports.
Identified by Police a 37-year-old Hong Kong resident surnamed Zhang, she was knocked unconscious by the tree but was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.
Her baby was delivered safely through caesarian section but was said to be in critical condition.
“The baby is still in the intensive care unit; the condition is critical but the mother was certified dead,” a spokesman said.
Hong Kong is often rainy and windy in summer because of seasonal typhoons and it was people at the scene who assisted in removing the woman, with serious head injuries, from under the tree.
“The people at the nearby bus station were saying that there seemed to be someone crushed by the tree, so a few of them walked there and lifted the tree to find a pregnant lady there, she was not moving,” a witness reported.
“The tree crushed a pregnant female, she was unconscious and after she was sent to a hospital, she was certified to be dead,” a police spokeswoman said, without giving further details.
Apple Daily website displayed a pregnant woman being transported off an ambulance on a stretcher.
Messages of support for the baby flooded in.
