My son, I learnt from my late father to “Keep with It” to be “up to date with what was happening” to know “What’s hip” in every age. Since I know “what’s happening,” I am really worried by what I see is going on.
It is a big shame when I hear so many of you youngsters bragging about what you have, done or will do. This show and tell false bravado seems to dominate your conversations.
My son, the fact of the matter is that attention-seeking behavior rarely appreciates the level of appreciation it receives. It is never enough.
Many of you have abandoned our traditions and ape western culture, appropriating hip-hopculture, which is negatively influencing your attitude to life. Quite a number of you young ones are adopting self-glorification as a way to build your persona due to the fact that you think our traditional ways are for the ancient and you know it all.
But as a new study in the Journal of Consumer Psychology demonstrated, the ostentatious display of expensive personal adornments is most likely to be practiced by people who perceive themselves to be of low status.
My son ‘self hype’ is meaningless and you should let others blow your horn and if you are really worth something, they will.
Take care that you do not fall to the temptation to indulge in excessive showmanship constantly competing with your peers in the form of possessions, women and trash talk.
You should avoid at all cost, getting stuck in a state of perpetual adolescence and insecurity such that you substitute gimmickry, fashion, sexual prowess, material possessions and catch phrases in the place of substance and gravitas because if you get on this roller it is difficult to change and will impact your life adversely.
The truth is that no amount of applause, bling or recognition can fill that void created by lack of good character because life is not Eko For Show.
