Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Health Services, Olusegun Olulade has revealed that not less than four per cent of over 20 million of Lagos residents are infected with the deadly HIV\AIDS.
Olulade made this revelation while inspecting some facilities at the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency. The inspection was part of the oversight functions of the committee.
The lawmaker therefore told the management of the agency of his readiness to go into partnership with the agency and other non-governmental organizations to enlighten the masses on the prevalence of the disease.
Olulade used this medium to call on the Local Council Development Authorities in the state to participate actively in creating awareness.
He said, “I call on all local governments to invest commitment through sensitizing and testing the people in their different communities.”
He also reiterated on working with his colleagues in the Assembly through creating platforms that will encourage people living with HIV\AIDS to function optimally in the society without stigmatization.
The Acting Director of the Agency, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, who welcomed the team of Lagos State House of Assembly Health Committee and Ministry of Health’s Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency thanked the chairman for the pledge and his commitment towards pursuing a healthy lagos.
While appealing for more enlightenment programmes on stigmatisation, Ogboye further tasked the government not to relent in his efforts to curb the disease.
Meanwhile, the state assembly committee has given illegal occupants of a landed property earmarked for primary Health Center in Ejigbo Area of the State to vacate the area within 30 days.
Olulade who is representing Epe constituency II, said he was preoccupied with ensuring that the health sector is revamped in line with the strategies and innovations put in the sector by the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
The lawmaker, who explained that “the Governor, Mr. Ambode is putting everything in place to move the health sector to the next level and this plan must not be sabotaged”, urged all the trespassers to vacate the land, which has a sign a post with “Proposed Site for the Construction of Primary Healthcare Centre (Ilamose Ward) inscribed on it.
Olulade made it known that the trespassers have been warned verbally by the Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) and have been issued 7 days quit notice.
He however appealed to the LCDA to extend the 7-day ultimatum to one month after which the trespassers will face forceful ejection if they fail to comply.
