When asked about speculations and pressure about his removal from office or resignation before the general elections, Prof. Attahiru Jega in a Town hall meeting today at Abuja assured the people he has no reason to resign. “I have a job to do and have no reason to resign, there is no pressure on me to resign and no body has told me about removal’.
The INEC chairman insisted card readers would be used at the polls and stated that not using the card readers would meant loses in many fundamental respects. “Nigerians should be confident that cloned cards cannot be used. The card readers will not read cloned cards”.
Explaining further on this, he stated multiple registration as a reason for non-acceptance of Temporary Voters Cards. According to him, over 4 million entries were gotten rid off their database as multiple registration, the commission however left one entry per person even for multiple registrants, that one entry was then printed out as Permanent Voter’s Card. Not having a PVC however means INEC cannot verify one’s claim to have registered properly.
Talking about the availability of PVC for every eligible voter, he stated that there are 68.8 million registered voters in Nigeria and so far INEC has produced 67 million PVCS. There are yet about 700,000 cards to be produced which he promises to have them ready for voterss before March 28th.
While the Town Hall Meeting was going on at Abuja, the two factions of Odua People’s Congress OPC, were in Lagos holding a protest calling for the resignation of the INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega.
