The Durban police have smashed a gang of four rouge policemen who specialize in robbing companies.
Two of the officers aged 44 and 45 were arrested by detectives in December and have been charged to court and being remanded till February 19.
Another two policemen, aged 35 and 44 who tried to break into a safe at a shop were arrested last weekend by the KwaZulu Natal provincial task force.
However they will face a bigger charge “business robbery and kidnapping” because they tied shop guards with cable ties before dumping them in sugar cane plantations.
The police officers were part of a group that had allegedly been trying to rob the shop.
While police were confident more arrests would follow as their investigation was continuing, they said the two police officers would face business robbery and kidnapping charges after it was alleged that they had tied the guards with cable ties, forced them into a taxi and dumped them in sugar cane plantations.
The suspected officers allegedly returned to the shop and tried to force open a safe, but failed but allegedly consoled themselves with allegedly stealing five radios and cigarettes before fleeing.
They were expected to appear in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the crime took place in December.
She said “criminals” would not be tolerated in the police service and said the arrests demonstrated that police were equipped and ready to arrest their own if they were suspected of wrongdoing.
“These latest arrests are a clear indication we are doing everything in our control to rid this organization of criminal elements. Police officers of this calibre have no place in the SAPS. We condemn criminal conduct by police members in the strongest terms,” she said.
