The cloudy day added to her moodiness. It appeared she woke up from the wrong side of the bed. She felt grouchy and had head pounded. That day, the rain poured with so much annoyance.
It reminded her of the days of old. Was it another great flood like the time of Noah? She thought to herself as she watched the raindrops trickle down her window pane.
The blue curtains almost tore into half with the force of the wind. The power holding company, as usual, had seized electricity as soon as the rain gave the signal. Darkness lurked everywhere. It has just her and her thoughts.
Her phone rang. She used Brymo’s Ara as her ringtone. Even though she didn’t understand most of the lyrics because they were in the Yoruba dialect, she had a great liking for the song. She reached for the vibrating device on the table loaded with Vogue magazines and cosmetics. Her laptop squeezed itself to secure a spot on the table. The caller was from an unknown number. She cleared her throat, then muttered a dry hello.
The caller responded with some incomprehensible words. Her patience span was so thin.
“Who is this one?” She wondered.
“Sorry wrong number”
Then her thumb made for the end call button. It was back to her lonely self and thoughts in the living room. She had to do a relationship assessment lest she ended up broken and bruised like in the past.
It had been three months since she started ‘dating’ Jayden. At least that what was he made her believe. Never for once had he introduced her to his friends or even parents. He would sweet-talk her to come to his house every weekend. Then he would spoil her with gifts he bought from an expensive shop after satisfying his sexual urges. It was becoming a cycle. She had to break out. That weekend, she rejected any form of temptation. It was time for frank talk.
“He loves you to be lavishing expensive gifts on you,” Her heart said
“He is just drawn to to me, nothing more,” Her body said
“Two can play the game. Continue to give him what he wants to get what you want,” Her brain cut in.
“No!” Her logical mind was pissed off
” You can’t continue like this? How old are you? Is this what you want for your life? The red flags are obvious. You need to put an end to whatever is going on between you two” It went on and on.
The dialogue with her body, brain, heart and mind was driving her crazy. She was certain she didn’t want to be used by any man. Neither did she want to be a sexual object. Maybe she was greedy for her to have stayed that long, but she had to define the relationship now or never. At some point, she had confronted him to know his stance in the relationship, but he had brushed her aside. He used a flimsy excuse to hide from the interrogation.
She picked up her phone, typed, “Where is this relationship heading to?” and sent to Jayden. Few minutes later, she checked and saw he had seen the text. Yet there was no reply. She knew it was of no use, she had to stop being his undercover lover.
