The White House has announced that a team will be sent to assist the Nigerian government in finding the 276 school girls abducted in Chibok nearly three weeks ago.
The announcement comes hours after reports of another abduction of 8 girls from a village in Borno State. International outcry over the handling of events thus far has reached fever pitch, fuelled further by the release of a video of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claiming responsibility for the Chibok abduction and announcing the groups plans to sell the girls.
A statement by the president’s spokesman Reuben Abati reveals the President Jonathan’s acceptance and appreciation of the assistance offered.
“The offer from President Barack Obama which was conveyed to President Jonathan by the United States Secretary of State, Mr John Kerry in a telephone conversation, which began at 15.30 Hours On Tuesday, includes the deployment of U.S. security personnel and assets to work with their Nigerian counterparts in the search and rescue operation … Mr Kerry assured President Jonathan that the United States’ is wholly committed to giving Nigeria all required support and assistance to save the abducted girls and bring the reign of terror unleashed on parts of the country by Boko Haram to an end.”
