‘Japa’ is a slang for relocating to a foreign country. This is fast becoming the trend these days. The loss of hope in Nigeria coupled with the loss of faith in leadership, insecurity, unfavourable economic conditions, and a high level of corruption, has more and more people leaving the country for abroad. When there is a better solution to the national problem why won’t people want to go where the grasses appear greener?
There are justifiable reasons an individual can decide to go abroad and these include studies, medical treatment, good job offers, and so on. However, joining the bandwagon of those ‘japaing’ may turn out to be a wrong decision if you do it for the wrong reasons. See below:
- To escape Nigeria’s problem
There is nowhere devoid of life challenges. Every country has its unique problems. So if you think if you leave Nigeria, the problems have ended, please rethink. It could even be worse as a foreigner.
2. To go with the Japa train
Take a step back because the same way people are rushing out is how they would rush back in. You should not always make decisions based on what is trending. Don’t abandon all you have amassed to rush abroad.
3. Security
This may be a good reason to japa but note that every country faces security threats. It is not enough to leave your country because of security. Most times, there is more than meets the eye.
4. Billing
Overseas, you will discover that you can’t avoid bills and certain responsibilities. There are more bills to settle like utility bills, electricity , gas , water, transportation, Wi-Fi, healthcare, cellphone etc
5. Access to credit
This is untrue. In fact your access to a credit system will only end you up in debt if you misuse the credit system and you might end up using the rest of your life abroad to repay debts.
