Olakunle Oginni, King’s College London Many Africans who are not gay or bisexual – sexually attracted only to people of the same sex or of both sexes – claim that being gay or bisexual is not acceptable for religious and cultural reasons. Laws in numerous African countries – as is the case in Nigeria – also reflect this by criminalising same-sex sexual activities and same-sex marriage. This cultural and legal environment increases the chances that gay and bisexual individuals will be discriminated against. They can also face threats and physical violence. Gay and bisexual people are aware of this, and…

The recent BBC Africa video which revealed lecturers in Lagos and Ghana sexually harassing teenage students may have come as a surprise to many, but not to me or anyone who has been through the tertiary level of education in Nigeria. The truth is most of us have knowledge of these happenings whether personally or otherwise. My experience, though not sexual in nature, is born from an ill and corrupt society. As a fresh undergraduate, I had mentally prepared myself to be an A-grade student and I worked hard for it. But nothing prepared me for the harsh reality –…
Ning Hsieh, Michigan State University and Hui Liu, Michigan State University Is marriage good for you? A large number of studies show that married people enjoy better health than unmarried people, such as lower rates of depression and cardiovascular conditions, as well as longer lives. However, these findings have been developed primarily based on data of heterosexual populations and different-sex marriages. Only more recently have a few studies looked into gay and lesbian populations and same-sex marriages to test if marriage is related to better health in these populations – and the evidence is mixed. Our study, published online on…
Malcolm X popularly said, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”. The importance of education can’t be overemphasized, hence, Wadi Ben-Hirki takes today’s spot as our Woman Crush Wednesday. Wadi is an education advocate from Nigeria, founder of the Wadi Ben-Hirki Foundation which she created to impact the lives of the less privileged, marginalized and disadvantaged through humanitarianism and activism. Wadi was only an undergraduate teenager when she took up the role to be the voice and advocate for those who have been silenced because of society, culture or life’s limitations. Because…
On Monday, BBC Africa Eye released a documentary exposing lecturers in targeted West African universities. The documentary revealed the plight of female students who are often sexually harassed by lecturers to better their grades. The BBC Africa Eye team conducted an undercover investigation after gathering dozens of testimonies, by sending journalists who posed as students inside the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana. It was disclosed that female reporters were sexually harassed, propositioned and put under pressure by senior lecturers at the institutions – all the while wearing secret cameras in a 13-minutes video documentary released. President Buhari…
Miroslav Palanský, Charles University Tax havens have become a defining feature of the global financial system. Multinational companies can use various schemes to avoid paying taxes in countries where they make vast revenues. In new research, my colleague Petr Janský and I estimate that around US$420 billion in corporate profits is shifted out of 79 countries every year. This equates to about US$125 billion in lost tax revenue for these countries. As a result, their state services are either underfunded or must be funded by other, often lower-income taxpayers. It contributes to rising inequality both within countries and across the…
Kamal A Munir, Cambridge Judge Business School and Hamza Mudassir, Cambridge Judge Business School Traditional banks are haunted by financial technology – fintech – firms. Challengers such as mobile-first banks Chime in the US, Monzo in the UK and Germany’s N26 have been around for a number of years now, but big global and regional banks are still struggling to deal with the competition. While fintechs experience a goldrush of investment – US$111 billion in 2018, up from US$51 billion in 2017 – banking CEOs find themselves under increasing pressure from shareholders alarmed at the slow rate of change taking…
Reading 1 Hg 1:1-8 On the first day of the sixth month in the second year of King Darius, The word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to the governor of Judah, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, and to the high priest Joshua, son of Jehozadak: Thus says the LORD of hosts: This people says: “The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” (Then this word of the LORD came through Haggai, the prophet:) Is it time for you to dwell in your own paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now…
