Reading 1 Dt 10:12-22 Moses said to the people: “And now, Israel, what does the LORD, your God, ask of you but to fear the LORD, your God, and follow his ways exactly, to love and serve the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD which I enjoin on you today for your own good? Think! The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD, your God, as well as the earth and everything on it. Yet in his love for your fathers the LORD was…

Derek Headey, The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Harold Alderman, The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Poor diets are the number one risk factor in the global burden of disease: they account for one in five deaths globally. In higher income countries sugar, fat and red meat increase the risks of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. These usually kill people later in life. Meanwhile people in lower income countries struggle to access nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, meat and fish. This puts them at risk of wasting, stunting and micro-nutrient deficiencies. These tend to kill…

The world has been rewired. And nobody wrote a user’s manual. Advances in digital media and mobile devices, and the rising power of social media, are changing the way people engage…

Karen Graaff, Stellenbosch University Numerous studies have noted that South Africa is an extremely violent country with high rates of interpersonal violence and homicide. Along with this, the rates of sexual violence are high, with a report by the Medical Research Council showing that 25% of women in their study had been raped in their lifetime. Although the rates of violence are extremely high in South Africa, the ways in which it plays out are similar in many ways to other countries. Around the world most violence is perpetrated by men, often against women, but to an even greater extent…

Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with anxiety. It was one of the lowest points in my life and I experienced firsthand how our minds have the capability of tilting the health scale of our physical bodies positively or negatively. A turning point for me was knowing that mental health is equally (if not more) as important as physical health. Yesterday night, I stumbled on an Instagram post of a 26-year-old beautiful lady who shared her experience with chronic depression. She disclosed that in April of this year, she slit her wrist in an attempt to commit suicide. Reading her…

Instagram users have taken to issuing “weekiversary posts,” where they diligently mark the duration of their romances. An article in The New York Times explained how weekiversary posts have the unintended – or very much intended – consequence of shaming people who are not in love. The article also noted that this phenomenon makes some doubt the intensity of their own relationship. They wonder why their partners are not similarly starry-eyed and gushing online. Some even admitted that this phenomenon prompted them to stay in relationships longer than they should have: they go on celebrating their weekiversaries, just to keep…
