    Health benefits of dongoyaro leaves

    0
By Pride Team on October 22, 2026 Health

Dongoyaro, commonly known as the neem tree, is a familiar sight in many parts of Nigeria. Its leaves have been used in traditional medicine for generations, with people turning to them for various health and skin care purposes. The tree, scientifically known as Azadirachta indica, is valued for its bitter leaves, seeds, bark and other parts, which contain natural compounds that researchers continue to study.

Although dongoyaro has a long history of traditional use, it is important to distinguish between its potential health benefits and effects that have been firmly established by scientific research. Here are some of the possible benefits of dongoyaro leaves and what to know before using them.

    1. May help support skin health

Dongoyaro leaves are traditionally used in skin care because they contain compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties observed in laboratory studies. Neem-based preparations are sometimes used in traditional remedies for itching, minor skin irritation and other skin concerns.

However, laboratory findings do not necessarily mean that applying neem leaves directly to the skin will treat an infection or skin condition. Fresh leaves and homemade mixtures can also cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Anyone experiencing persistent rashes, painful swelling or a worsening skin condition should seek medical advice.

    2. Contains antioxidant compounds

Neem leaves contain plant compounds, including flavonoids and other polyphenols, that have demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory research. Antioxidants help protect cells against damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.

A diet containing a variety of fruits, vegetables and other plant foods can help provide antioxidants. However, there is not enough reliable human evidence to conclude that drinking dongoyaro leaf preparations prevents diseases associated with oxidative stress.

    3. May have antimicrobial properties

One of the reasons neem has attracted scientific interest is its potential to act against certain bacteria and fungi. Extracts from different parts of the neem tree have shown antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.

This has encouraged further research into possible uses in oral care, skin care and other health applications. Nevertheless, the strength of these effects depends on how the extract is prepared and the microorganism being studied. Dongoyaro leaves should not replace prescribed antibiotics, antifungal medicines or professional treatment for infections.

    4. May support oral hygiene

Neem has a history of use in traditional oral hygiene, particularly through chewing sticks made from parts of the tree. Some neem-based oral care products have also been investigated for their effects on plaque and gum health.

These findings are promising, but evidence for the effectiveness and safety of homemade dongoyaro leaf preparations remains limited. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth and attending regular dental checkups remain important for maintaining oral health.

    5. May have anti-inflammatory properties

Certain compounds found in neem have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory and animal studies. Inflammation is part of the body’s natural response to injury and infection, but prolonged or excessive inflammation can contribute to various health problems.

Researchers are studying whether neem compounds could have useful applications in managing inflammatory processes. However, more well-designed human studies are needed before dongoyaro leaves can be recommended as a treatment for arthritis, chronic pain or other inflammatory conditions.

    6. May influence blood sugar levels

Neem has been investigated for its possible effects on blood glucose regulation. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds in the plant may influence blood sugar levels, but the evidence in humans is insufficient to establish a reliable benefit.

People living with diabetes should not use dongoyaro leaves as a substitute for prescribed medication, a balanced diet or medical monitoring. Neem preparations could potentially affect blood sugar levels, making unsupervised use particularly concerning for people taking diabetes medicines.

    7. May have potential for further medical research

Researchers continue to investigate neem because it contains a range of biologically active compounds. Studies have explored its possible antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other biological effects.

These investigations may help scientists identify useful compounds for future medicines or health products. However, promising laboratory findings are only an early stage of research. They do not establish that eating the leaves, drinking their extracts or applying homemade mixtures will produce the same results in people.

Safety precautions when using dongoyaro leaves

Despite its traditional uses, dongoyaro should not automatically be considered safe simply because it comes from a plant. The safety of neem depends on the part of the tree used, the preparation, the amount consumed and the person’s health.

    Consider the following precautions:

Neem oil can cause serious poisoning when swallowed, particularly in children. It should never be treated as a home remedy to drink.

There is insufficient evidence to establish a safe and effective dose for drinking dongoyaro leaf preparations. Concentrated extracts may carry additional risks.

Pregnant women and women trying to conceive should avoid medicinal neem preparations. Neem products may pose reproductive risks, and their safety during pregnancy has not been established.

Neem may affect blood sugar and could interact with medicines or other treatments. Speak with a qualified health professional before using it medicinally.

Dongoyaro leaves should not replace medical care for infections, diabetes, high blood pressure or other serious conditions.

Discontinue use if you experience itching, swelling, stomach discomfort or other unusual symptoms, and seek medical help if the reaction is severe.

Dongoyaro leaves have an important place in traditional Nigerian medicine and contain natural compounds that have attracted scientific interest.

However, many of the claimed health benefits have not been adequately confirmed in human studies. It is therefore best to approach dongoyaro as a plant with potential medicinal properties rather than a proven cure for various illnesses.
