LCE: Tell me why you chose to write and produce a rom-com for the Nollywood market?
Segilola – writing specifically for theNollywood market was not my intention, I just wanted to write a story about an international subject matter that is very relevant today and one that Nigerians can be proud of.
Edith – after being tired of going up for the same limited roles as actresses we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands. Segi had an idea for a film and wrote it. I read it and added some comedy elements to it. We then decided to produce it. If you want something done a lot of the time it’s best to do it yourself. We felt that this film was so relevant for the Nollywood market as it wasn’t your typical Nigerian film and something that a lot of people would be able to relate to.
LCE: How did you fund your venture?
Segilola – the majority was self-funded with a few investments from a close friends and family.
Edith – as Segi said, personal funding.
LCE: As women in the film industry, have you been met with any particular challenges or setbacks?
Segilola – absolutely! (lol) everyday in fact. I genuinely feel like some people have made it their mission to sabotage our hard work! As a woman in a very male dominated industry, I had to grow a thick skin fast and develop some testosterone in the process. We have faced challenges right from script stage. I remember one guy in particular, (not going to name any names) but we went to him with the story hoping for a distribution deal and he completely dismissed the script and gave some very negative feedback about the storyline, the plot and said if changes weren’t made it would end up being a bad film. I just had to laugh it off and move on. There’s only a handful of men who have genuinely supported myself and Edith from the very beginning and the rest were shocked to say the least at the premiere (lol).
Edith – Yes. Not being taken seriously was the first obstacle. When people are met with a pretty face and a smile, they somehow find it hard to believe that you’ve got a feature film on deck. Some people have other things on their agenda. Another thing I felt was a lack of unity in the industry. You have people who have been doing this for years and we coming along with a new project is somewhat met with resistance. Some people fail to realise that there is room for everyone and there is definitely power in numbers. Why not combine someone’s years experience in the industry with a new filmmaker’s fresh idea?
LCE: What advise would you give to femalefilmakers wanting to get into this business?
Segilola – STAND YOUR GROUND and BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! I can’t reiterate this enough. You will have so many people telling you so many different things but as long as you have God and believe in the skills He has given you then you’re good. Stay focused, master your talents and work hard. If you feel things aren’t going the way you wanted or you’re facing difficulties with some areas in particular, be patient. It’s probably not the right time. I had to wait an entire year to get the money for this film. It was challenging and taxing but I’m so glad I stuck to my guns because now Edith and I have the freedom to do whatever we want with “Mum, Dad Meet Sam” and not to mention we keep whatever profit we make bar a small percentage. Believe, focus, work hard and you’ll go far. Remember faith without action is void.
Edith – Work extra hard at what you do and preserve because you will encounter lions (as funny as that sounds I’m being serious). Align yourself with people that do what you do so that you have people to encourage you. Study and learn your craft, you can never be too skilled or too smart. Create your own opportunities. If you’re a writer, find an actress, and a cameraman then film something. Between you and your network of 3-4 people you already have a project. And please please please, women let us help each other. Once you get your foot in the door pull your sister in and work together and BE GREAT!
LCE: You both look beautiful on and off camera. Do you have any health or beauty tips that you can share with our readers?
Segilola – I don’t really have a routine per say but I guess exercise, eat as healthy as possible (I’ve been eating a lot of raw vegetables lately), drink lots of water, getregular pamper sessions and have lots of sex with your spouse if you’re married. It’s a great fat burner and it releases stress!
Edith – To be honest I don’t have a particular routine. I do have a crazy sweet tooth so moderation is my friend. I eat small portions combined with being a very active person so I naturally burn food off. I also drink a lot of water.
