The ‘cut soap’ trend took me by surprise. Waking up one day only to be engulfed with the trend, I wondered what it was all about. As I scrolled through my social media, it was on almost all pages. It was on the lips of people. Even my pastor in the church made reference to it during one of his sermons.
Honestly, I was lost about what the trend was speaking about. Finally, after watching some comic videos, the mystery behind the cut soap trend became clear to me. Basically, it is a situation of transferable grace, prosperity, and everything good. When one person seems to be doing well with ease, another person wondering why his/her own is opposite would say ‘cut soap ‘ for me.
This trend can be traced to Nollywood films. We all know that most of the scripts are reflections of what goes on the society. It is what is embedded in our culture. A young man who wants to cut corners, tired of the frustrating life with no job, no finance, and no means of livelihood or plan for survival, get desperate. As the saying goes an idle man is the devil’s workshop. The young man becomes consumed with the devil’s tactics and in the process sells his soul to him. He visits a ‘Babalawo, someone, who is the father of mysteries. The Babalawo is known to use supernatural powers through diabolism to get the desires and wishes of his ‘clients’.
Soap which is known for its cleansing properties is now one of the rituals performed for attaining wealth. This is passed on to the young man to use at midnight. This narration sounds like what you would see in a Nollywood movie and it is. This is not a deviation from what goes on in a dark world. After the ritual of soap washing, the young man overnight starts to do well. It was courtesy of the soap the Babalawo had given him. Somebody else may be envious of the prosperity of the young man and his possessions and would want to go through the same process of the rituals. This was how the ‘cut soap’ trend came about.
Truth be told, the blessings of the devil come with curses and never enjoyable. A typical example is what happened in Living Bondage: Breaking Free, there was no peace and life to enjoy wealth sort through diabolical means by some of the casts. You might say it is just a movie. But like I pointed out this is a reflection of what goes on the society.
On the flip side, we may joke with the ‘cut soap’ for me as a passing comment when we see our peers doing well especially when they post on social media. This goes to show that not everybody goes through diabolic means to prosper. Some people follow the due process of hard work and diligence. Unlike the ‘Cutting soap’ process in the real sense, it remains indisputable that hard work with God’s grace pays off and it is durable.
