The rankings were determined based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence, as stated on EduRank’s website. The analysis involved 24.5 million citations from 2.16 million academic publications across 1,104 universities in Africa.
EduRank employs rigorous statistical analyses to generate comparative rankings across different fields, regions, and globally. In the 2024 rankings, South Africa dominated with seven universities in the top 10, followed by one each from Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya.

- University of Nairobi: A collegiate research institution in Kenya.
- University of Johannesburg (UJ): Among the largest comprehensive contact universities in South Africa.
- University of South Africa (Unisa): A dedicated distance education university.
