Nigerian music star, Iyanya, born Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, has disclosed a terrible time in his life when he went bankrupt that he contemplated suicide.
In 2020, Iyanya was depressed after experiencing financial crises that led him to lose his home and stay in a hotel.
During a candid conversation on the Tea With Tay podcast hosted by actor Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh, popularly known as Taymesan, Iyanya shared his experience.
According to Iyanya, after losing his house, he had been staying at a hotel until he eventually couldn’t manage the hotel bills.
The situation worsened as Iyanya found himself involved in a court case with his former management, Temple Management Company. He was accused of “stealing” a car belonging to the company.
These challenges affected Iyanya’s career and he couldn’t perform shows or generate income. Recalling those tough moments, Iyanya said, “I was in court for a long time, I didn’t do shows. I couldn’t do anything.”
He explained that the stoppage in his income affected him massively. He emphasised that during successful times, the flow of money is different, and spending habits vary compared to relying on savings.
Iyanya’s struggles took an even more unexpected turn when, just after his last court appearance, the COVID-19 pandemic surfaced. Stuck in a hotel and with no steady income, he found himself facing challenging circumstances.
Despite the difficulties, Iyanya expressed gratitude for the kindness of Alaba, the hotel owner, who allowed him to stay for a long period.
As the pandemic continued, Iyanya’s situation worsened. Unable to perform or tour due to lockdown restrictions, he grappled with the absence of income and the ongoing legal battle. He got fed up and contemplated ending his life. He shared that the hotel manager played a crucial role in supporting him during this difficult time.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Iyanya said, “I almost committed suicide.
