After months of planning, excitement and anticipation, your wedding day has finally come and gone. The morning after your wedding can feel surprisingly emotional. You may wake up tired, happy, nostalgic or even slightly overwhelmed as you begin to process everything that happened.
Rather than rushing into another busy day, take some time to slow down, enjoy the moment and ease yourself back into normal life. Here are some things worth doing the morning after your wedding.
- Sleep in and get some much-needed rest
Wedding days can be long and exhausting. From getting ready early in the morning to dancing and celebrating late into the night, you probably did not get much rest.
If your schedule allows, sleep for as long as you need. There is no need to feel guilty about staying in bed for a little longer. Your body deserves the break.
- Have breakfast together
The morning after your wedding is a lovely opportunity to spend quiet time with your new spouse. Have breakfast together, whether it is a simple meal in your hotel room, breakfast at home or brunch with close family and friends.
Without the pressure of a wedding programme, you can finally sit down, talk and enjoy each other’s company.
- Talk about the wedding
Take some time to reminisce about your favourite moments from the wedding. Talk about the funny moments, the emotional moments, the speeches, the dancing and the unexpected things that happened.
You may also discover that your spouse noticed things you completely missed during the excitement of the day.
- Check in with each other
The wedding may have been about celebrating your love, but the marriage is about the life you are building together.
Ask each other how you feel. Talk about what you enjoyed and how you are settling into this new chapter. It is a simple way to reconnect after spending so much time surrounded by guests and family.
- Thank your parents, family and close friends
If you have not already done so, take a moment to appreciate the people who helped make your wedding possible.
A simple message or phone call to your parents, bridal party, relatives and close friends can mean a lot. You do not need to write a lengthy message. A sincere thank you is enough.
- Take care of your wedding clothes and personal items
Your wedding outfit, accessories, shoes and other personal items may be scattered around after the celebration.
Gather everything together and store important items properly. If your dress or suit needs professional cleaning, make arrangements for it before putting it away.
- Check your gifts and cards
If you received gifts or cards from your guests, make sure they are safely kept. You do not have to open everything immediately if you are tired.
For monetary gifts, keep them somewhere secure and make a note of who gave what so that you can acknowledge everyone’s generosity later.
- Look through a few photographs
You may have received a few photographs from friends and family already. Spend some time looking through them and reliving the day.
However, do not feel pressured to go through every photograph or video immediately. Your official wedding photographs will come later, so enjoy the little glimpses you have for now.
- Drink plenty of water and eat properly
After a busy wedding celebration, your body may need some attention. Drink plenty of water and have a proper meal.
If you stayed up late celebrating, resist the temptation to survive on leftover cake and snacks. A nourishing breakfast or lunch will help you feel more refreshed.
- Do not start unpacking your entire life immediately
There may be wedding decorations to return, clothes to organise, gifts to sort and messages to answer. You do not have to do everything in one morning.
Permit yourself to rest. Unless something is urgent, it can wait.
- Send a few personal messages
You will probably wake up to numerous messages from people congratulating you. You do not need to respond to everyone immediately.
However, you can send personal messages to people who played a particularly important role in your wedding. Let them know that their presence and support meant something to you.
- Enjoy your first quiet morning as a married couple
Perhaps the most important thing to do is simply enjoy being together.
Put your phones away for a while. Have a conversation. Take a walk. Watch a film. Have breakfast in bed. Pray together if that is part of your routine. Or simply sit together and enjoy the peace after the excitement of the wedding.
Take a breath, rest, laugh together and appreciate the fact that you have just begun a new chapter as husband and wife.
