May you never know this darkness. When you cry and feel God has turned His back on you. Never feel such pain and anguish That you have finally got no-one in this world, For if God is against you, all His creation are against you. I have felt the pain of the body, of the mind, of the spirit, And they have long been forgotten. But the pain of the soul is engraved. You feel it constantly.   Adaudo Anyiam-Osigwe – From her book of poems – A Little Understanding. Poems from the End of Childhood to the Beginning of…

After a while, he emerged and informed his mother that he had thought it over and then said a prayer. “Fine”, said the pleased mother. “If you ask God to help you not misbehave, He will help you.” “Oh, I didn’t ask Him to help me not misbehave,” said Johnny. “I asked Him to help you put up with me. Charles Shey Wiysonge, South African Medical Research Council People are now living longer in sub-Saharan Africa than they did two decades ago. This is an achievement, given that life expectancy in the region went down the drain from the 1990s to the mid-2000s as it choked under the devastating effects of the HIV epidemic. The question to ask is whether the additional years are spent in good or poor health. This question matters because how long people live affects the population’s state of health and leading causes of disability. Longevity means that these change over time which in turn has…

Andrea Waling, La Trobe University Why do men send dick pics? Some research and popular commentary suggests it is for reasons of narcissism and over-confidence. Some men no doubt send them in the hopes of receiving a nude photo in kind, or because they genuinely believe that’s what women desire. Dick pics are widely considered a form of technology-facilitated sexual violence, misogynistic and a sign of sexual pathology in the form of flashing/exhibitionism (disgraced US congressman Anthony Weiner comes to mind here). However, research by myself and Tinonee Pym has uncovered a more complicated picture. Looking at social media, digital…

Jelena Kecmanovic, Georgetown University More than one-third of American adults view social media as harmful to their mental health, according to a new survey from the American Psychiatric Association. Just 5% view social media as being positive for their mental health, the survey found. Another 45% say it has both positive and negative effects. Two-thirds of the survey’s respondents believe that social media usage is related to social isolation and loneliness. There is a strong body of research linking social media use with depression. Other studies have linked it to envy, lower self-esteem and social anxiety. As a psychologist who…

Robin R. Means Coleman, Texas A&M University In the horror genre, black is definitely back. The movie “Ma,” which premieres on May 31, will star Academy Award winner Octavia Butler as Sue Ann, a lonely middle-age woman who clings to a group of teens to the point of obsession. “Ma” comes on the heels of Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed “Us,” which is also led by an Academy Award winner, Lupita Nyong’o. And let’s not forget that Peele’s previous film, “Get Out,” won the Academy Award for best screenplay last year. Black actors have always had a role in horror films.…
