Herman Wasserman, University of Cape Town and Dani Madrid-Morales, University of Houston Concerns about “fake news” have dominated discussions about the relationship between the media and politics in the developed world in recent years. The extraordinary amount of attention paid in scholarship and in public debates to questions around truth, veracity and deception can be connected to the role of “fake news” in the 2016 US presidential election, and US President Donald Trump’s use of the term to dismiss his critics. The term “fake news” itself is controversial because it’s poorly defined. The panic created by the spread of misinformation…

Melanie Wakeman, Birmingham City University More than one in ten children under the age of three have tooth decay according to statistics published by Public Health England. The figures show that an average of three teeth in these children were decayed, missing or filled. This is shocking, although not surprising considering children of all age groups exceed the current recommendations for added sugar. The World Health Organisation recommends we limit our sugar intake to 10% of our total calorie intake a day because of the negative effect that sugar has on our health. Boys and girls around the age of…

Edmund Keogh, University of Bath Men should take better care of themselves. We die at an earlier age than women, despite women suffering more health conditions and making greater use of health services. Life expectancy differences may be different because of biology, but we also know that men engage in riskier activities, including poorer lifestyle choices. Men are more likely to drink excessively and smoke, both of which are associated with serious health conditions and increased hospital admissions. Most worryingly, men are more likely to commit suicide, where they are three times more likely to take this route – percentages…
Amanda Gouws, Stellenbosch University Nearly one and a half years ago when Alyssa Milano asked women to click MeToo on their social media platforms, the #MeToo movement was born. Since then millions of women have indicated through social media that they too have been victims of sexual harassment or assault. The power of this movement has been its ability to show the world how pervasive sexual harassment is. And it’s had an effect on perpetrators. In the film industry producers and actors such as Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Bill Cosby all lost their jobs. But is Africa part of…
Liz Bucar, Northeastern University Major art museums have realized there is much to learn from clothing that is both religiously coded and fashion forward. Earlier this year the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a fashion exhibition inspired by the Catholic faith titled “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination.” With more than 1.6 million visitors, it was the most popular exhibit in the Met’s history. And now the de Young Museum of San Francisco has the first major exhibit devoted to the Islamic fashion scene. “Contemporary Muslim Fashions” displays 80 swoon-worthy ensembles – glamorous gowns, edgy streetwear, conceptual couture – loosely…
Laura Alfers, Rhodes University On March 8 each year trade unions and women’s rights organisations mark International Women’s Day by calling for policies and legislation that better support working women. Such calls relate to wage equality, maternity leave and early child care programmes. But these demands tend to overlook the needs of some of the most vulnerable: the millions of poor working women in cities in developing countries who are forced to take their kids with them to work or miss out on better paid opportunities because they’re caring for young children. Some women take up work out of their…
Anna Einarsdóttir, University of Hull Every year I hope that someone like you or I will be celebrated on International Women’s Day. But it never happens. Instead we are inundated with inspirational stories about successful businesswomen – and for that read white and seemingly heterosexual – or world leaders – and for that, read black, possibly activist and probably heterosexual. While I think it is important to celebrate major achievements for women at home and around the world, these successes and the women who stand behind them seem a million miles away from most of us and our own realities.…
