The draws for the Roland Garros tournament have been concluded and Caroline Wozniacki finally broke her silence on the split from her ex-fiancé, golfer Rory McIlroy. The breakup looks more than likely to take the shine off Wozniacki if she chooses to participate in the French Open which starts on Sunday the 25th. The split was ‘totally unexpected’ by the tennis star who was shocked by the announcement from her ex-fiancé, golfer Rory McIlroy.
The current world No 14 took to Twitter during the week, to thank her fans for their support. “It’s a hard time for me right now. Thanks for all the sweet messages! Happy I support Liverpool right now because I know I’ll never walk alone,” she tweeted. Both Wozniacki and McIlroy are fans of age-long rivals, Liverpool FC and Manchester United, respectively hence the subtle dig at the golfer. It clearly seems like a humorous approach to ease herself through the pain of the breakup.
Asides from threats of emotional and psychological impact of the split on Wozniacki, she looks set to appear among the tournament’s favourites to keep her place. She bears a knee injury which forced her to quit from the Italian Open last week. The injury though, might seem comparatively trivial at this time, she is however, keen to participate at this weekend’s competition.
McIlroy had claimed that the split was ‘mutual and amicable’ but a close source to the tennis ace said the whole action was ‘a real bolt from the blue’. Reigning French Open champion Serena Williams shared her support with Wozniacki over Twitter saying, “I’ll always walk with you. #friendsforver”. The Danish tennis star who was world number one in 2012 and yet to win a Grand Slam, is worth an estimated £15 million.
The French Open is the second Grand Slam of the year and as expected is generating the kind of fever that makes the event one of the grandest in sports history. The early stages of the tournament as in other tennis events, are quite tricky without the required concentration level. Disappointments for the favourites have been experienced at the first round of the tournament.
The toughest draw could see No. 1 seed, Serena Williams in a possible third round match-up against Venus Williams. In the event of that encounter being realized, it will be the 25th meeting between both sisters in their unified profession since the start of their career. Thereafter, a potential quarterfinal match-up with Maria Sharapova will set the tone for a clash of titans after Serena navigates her play through Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.
The No. 2 seed, Li Na begins the tournament with big-hitting Kristina Mladenovic. But as she gets on in the draw she’ll face some of the most tenacious, consistent players the tournament will throw at her and that includes a potential third round game against Andrea Petkovic as well as a fourth round match-up with Caroline Wozniacki. At the quarterfinal round Li will likely face Jelena Jankovic or Sara Errani.
