Dear Dorothy,
My boyfriend is a complete dreamer. He wastes so much time fantasising about everything from inheriting millions to establishing world peace, he fails to live in the moment. Recently we went out for a meal and he spent the whole evening imagining what he’d do if the Prime Minister offered him a job. In the end, I could tell that he’d virtually convinced himself that he was working for the Government. I had to hiss at him to “snap out of it”, lighten the mood and start paying some attention to me. I know that he’s bored with his job, but these ridiculous fantasies are not only boring, but they’re also seriously trying my patience. How do I bring him back to reality?
Yours Sincerely,
Janet
Dear Janet,
We’re all guilty of daydreaming at times and imagining what it would be like to be rich or famous. But these thoughts don’t dominate our lives. We know the difference between fantasy and reality. Maybe if your man spent less time with his head in the clouds and more time doing something about his life, he’d feel more fulfilled. Talk to him. Tell him that something has to change and actions speak louder than words. If work is boring, what is he going to do about it? How is he going to make his dreams come true? Offer to support and help him, but make it clear that you have your limits.
Yours Truly,
Dorothy
