There was a time when love was not always displayed with grand gestures, expensive gifts or pictures on social media. Sometimes, you simply knew your parents loved each other by watching the little things they did together.
Mummy and Daddy may not have had relationship podcasts to listen to or couples therapists to follow online, but somehow, they had their own way of making marriage work. Looking back, there are so many things they did together that we are now beginning to appreciate and emulate.
- They made decisions together
Whether it was about the children, the home, finances or an important family matter, Mummy and Daddy often sat down and discussed things. One person might have had the final say, but there was usually a conversation before the decision was made.
Today, we understand that a strong relationship is not about one person always being right. It is about learning to listen, compromise and make decisions as a team.
- They raised their children together
Parenting was not left entirely to one person. Daddy might have been the disciplinarian while Mummy handled the everyday care, but both were involved in raising the children.
They knew what was happening in the family and worked together to ensure everyone was cared for. That teamwork is something many of us are trying to recreate in our own homes.
- They attended family events together
Remember those weddings, naming ceremonies, burials, birthdays and church programmes where Mummy and Daddy arrived together?
Sometimes one person was clearly more interested in the event than the other, but they still showed up for each other.
Today, we understand that showing up matters. You do not have to love every activity your partner enjoys, but sometimes you go because it matters to them.
- They shared responsibilities
It may not have been perfectly equal, but there was usually an understanding that running a home was a shared responsibility.
Daddy could help with school runs, errands or repairs, while Mummy handled other aspects of the household. They found a rhythm that worked for them.
We are now learning that partnership means contributing, not simply asking what your partner can do for you.
- They supported each other’s work
Many of our parents built their lives at a time when resources were limited. Yet, they often found ways to support one another’s businesses, careers and ambitions.
Mummy could recommend Daddy’s business to people she knew. Daddy could encourage Mummy to pursue an opportunity or help when work became demanding.
They understood that when one person grows, the whole family can benefit.
- They prayed together
For many families, prayer was a major part of their relationship. They prayed for their children, their finances, their health, their home and their future.
Even when life was difficult, they found comfort in believing that they were not facing everything alone.
For those of us who watched them, that shared faith became part of what we understood partnership to mean.
- They made sacrifices for each other
Our parents did not always get everything they wanted when they wanted it. Sometimes one person’s needs took priority because the family needed it.
Mummy might postpone something she wanted. Daddy might put a personal plan on hold. They understood that building a family sometimes requires sacrifice.
It was not always glamorous, but it was often an expression of love.
- They stayed through difficult seasons
This does not mean every marriage was perfect or that people should remain in harmful relationships. However, many of our parents understood that marriage would come with difficult seasons.
There were disagreements, financial challenges, misunderstandings and moments when they simply had to figure things out.
They taught us that love is not only about enjoying the good times. It is also about learning how to communicate, forgive and grow through challenging seasons.
Perhaps that is why, when we look back at Mummy and Daddy, we realise that they were teaching us something without saying much.
They showed us that companionship is about doing life together. It is about sharing responsibilities, supporting dreams, raising children, making sacrifices and showing up.
We may be living in a very different world today, but some lessons never go out of fashion.
