Holy Humour What? Jesus said, “Who do people say that I am?” And his disciples answered and said, “Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elijah, or one of the prophets. And Jesus answered and said, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Logos, existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated, in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to his creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father,…

Jill Newby, UNSW and Eoin McElroy, University of Leicester It’s a busy day at the office and your left eye has been twitching uncontrollably. So, out of curiosity and irritation you Google it. Jideofor Adibe, Nasarawa State University, Keffi Last month marked ten years since Mohammed Yusuf, founder of Boko Haram, died in police detention. His death led to the radicalisation of the sect and a declaration of Jihad against the Nigerian state. In an earlier paper on the sect I argued that before 2009, its operations were more or less peaceful, but that it was radicalised in 2009 after a confrontation with Nigerian security agencies. The police cracked down on the group setting off an armed uprising in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria. Opinions differ on the reasons for the government clampdown. But…

Christina Gibson-Davis, Duke University Over the past year, Southern Baptist leaders have been encouraging churchgoers to marry young. The push seems to stem primarily from the concern that many people – especially men – are having sex before they marry. Shorten the time between when men reach sexual maturity and when they marry, the reasoning goes, and men (and presumably women, too) will be more likely to be virgins on their wedding day. There are many reasons why the church might want to discourage early sexual activity, including limiting the number of out-of-wedlock births and reducing rates of sexually transmitted…

My Dear Daughter, I trust you are doing great. Someone sent me a written piece a few days ago and as I sat down to write you this letter, it occurred to me that I should send you the same message.  Please read and apply the lesson to your life. Before a father died, he said to his son: “This is a watch your grandfather gave to me. It is more than 200 years old.  But before I give it to you, go to the watch shop on the first street, and tell him I want to sell it, and…

The importance of women empowerment can not be overemphasized, especially at a time such as this when more and more women are seeking to break barriers in their chosen field and are actively causing desirable changes within the African socio-economic clime. At a time like this, it’s quite important for women to be given the tools needed to continually break grounds without avoidable limitations. Our Woman Crush Wednesday, Afua Osei, ensures women translate their creative ideas into thriving businesses through a platform, She Leads Africa, which she co-owns with Yasmin Belo-Osagie. According to the website, She Leads Africa is a…
