There has been an ongoing debate on if the character, T’Challa, King of Wakanda, should be recast since November. This debate stems from the death of Chadwick Boseman, and the need to immortalise him. In line with this, Moore, a producer on the 2018 film said in a recent interview, “You will not see T’Challa in the MCU 616 Universe.”
Recall that in December 2020, Disney and Marvel’s announced that there would not be another recast for this character. Marvel’s president, Kevin Feige in 2020 said of Boseman, “Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives. “His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. It’s for that reason we will not recast the character.”
But now, fans of “Black Panther” have spoken up and they want the character T’Challa played by Chadwick to be recast. Interestingly, the man’s own brother concurs. Chadwick Boseman’s brother, Derrick Boseman tells TMZ that he thinks T’Challa needs to live on in the ‘Black Panther’ franchise, and if that means tapping another actor to portray the king of Wakanda — the role Chadwick made famous and legendary, then so be it. He also suggested his interest in the role.
Derrick reveals that he believes his sibling (Chadwick Boseman) would have wanted this. Derrick explained Chadwick thought T’Challa was bigger than just himself as one guy saying that Chadwick knew the strength of the character T’Challa, and the positive influence it carries.
Confirming that there’s so much power in seeing a Black king especially in a superhero capacity, like in the Marvel flick, he opined that Marvel killing T’Challa in light of Chadwick’s death is depriving black kids of a role model to look up to.
