Ghana’s Vice President K.B. Amissah-Arthur has visited the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and sympathised with a female medical student of the Ghana Medical School on admission there with broken ribs and hips.
The girl (name withheld), a final year student, was forced to jump 20 feet to escape being raped by an armed thief after he had stripped her of her laptop, smart phones and cash.
The Vice President, Mr K. B. Amissah-Arthur, on Tuesday afternoon visited the final year student of the University of Ghana Medical School, who is on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, after jumping from the second floor of her hostel.
The student, who is recuperating from injuries at the intensive care unit of the hospital, narrated the ordeal she went through before she jumped from the balcony of her (American style) second floor hostel to flee from the alleged rapist.
Mr Amissah-Arthur, who was impressed by the courage of the young woman, presented her with an undisclosed sum of money to support her medical bills as well as a signed “Get Well Soon” card.
Criminal charges have already been brought against the suspect.
The Vice President was accompanied by the Minister of Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang; Deputy Education Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Deputy Transport Minister Joyce Bawa Mogtari.
The girl had returned from the bathroom last Thursday when the armed assailant confronted her and demanded her valuables.
She quickly handed over her laptop, her smart phones and all the cash on her.
The intruder, identified as a welder named Emmanuel Kyei, then asked her to undress and lie down.
“I pretended to unzip my trousers, dashed through the door shouting and jumped. I hit the edge of the balcony before hitting the floor”, she told fellow students who rushed her to the hospital.
Security around the medical students’ hostel is a bit compromised because the security men at post, cannot easily differentiate students from visitors and the students have been robbed often but this was the first time raped has been attempted.
