“Half of a Yellow Sun” st. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newthon, Genevieve Nnaji, Onyeka Onwenu
After a long wait since its premiere on May 16, 2014 in the US, the movie can now be seen in Nigerian cinemas. This is the first major movie about the Nigerian civil war (1967 to 1970) between the Biafran forces led by Odumegwu Ojukwu and Nigerian forces led General Yakubu Gowon. The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) had delayed the airing of this movie in Nigerian cinemas citing various excuses including that the movie is likely to undermine national security considering its volatile content. Sisters Olanna and Kainene return home to 1960s Nigeria, the differences between these sisters will either be widened or reduced by the effects of this war that they are involved in… though the movie made a disappointing $44,000 USD in the US… watch it and what you think of Nigeria’s history may change forever.
On a scale of 0 – 10, this movie is a 6.
“Expendables 3” st. Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgreen, Kelsey Grammer, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz and Robert Davi.
Though yet to hit the cinemas, this predictable movie has already leaked online. The latter part of this movie will definitely take you by surprise. If not for anything, this movie gave 70’s, 80’s and 90’s movie lovers the opportunity to enjoy their movie heroes again. Antonio Banderas brought such amazing humour to the movie that you’ll remember his famous Spykid father hero role.
The movie saw Sylvester Stallone dump his old expendables crew for a more tech’ young crew… how this panned out… if you are one of those who think a Jack Bauer “24” stunt will do faster and easier everything the expendables have been doing in earlier sequels, then this movie is for you – and if you don’t you will definitely smile through it all.
On a Scale of 0 – 10, this Movie is a 7.
