If you want to be in the good books of your boss, you have to prove yourself as reliable employee. While you work to grow your career, you can still build a professional relationship with your boss if you get your strategy right. It is not enough to do only what you are paid to do, you must show good initiative. Also, bear in mind that managers also have their job responsibilities, you don’t want to give the person a hard time while working with you.
If you want to a valuable and irreplaceable employee, you should be the following:
1. Be a problem solver
Every organisation faces problems, and they are seeking out solutions. Therefore when you come to your boss with a problem and you follow up with a proposed solution, it is big plus for you. Your solutions are not only saving your boss time, energy and costs, they are also showing that you are solution oriented.
2. Be creative
People are drawn to those who have creative ideas. It shows that they solve problems. If you want to filled with ideas to move your organisation, get familiar with your company goals, ,mission and vision. Then you would have a good understanding of the company’s challenges. Bosses are interested in ideas that would help save cost yet profitable. If you get this right, it is win for the company and for you.
3. Be practical
Talk is cheap. You have to prove to your boss that you know what you are proposing. Whenever pitching something to a boss or sharing an idea or even solving a problem, show him/her what you are talking about. Sketch it out, give them a flow chart, or a powerpoint presentation and talk them through it. It is better to capture the two of their senses, hearing, and seeing when presenting ideas. Always try to show people what you are talking about, they connect with you more easily.
4. Be ‘mentorable’
Don’t assume to know it all. Be teachable to seek the help of those ahead of you. As the protégé, make out time to build your relationship with your mentor. It is necessary that your boss becomes your mentor. However, build a solid relationship with your boss as it is prerequisite to your career success. Then it becomes easier for them to reference for you, because they see you as solution-oriented, respectful of their time, and full of an entrepreneurial spirit.
