If you intend colouring your hair for the first time, thumbs up! This is a big decision and requires boldness. Adding colour to your hair allows you to achieve a variety of different looks from funky and bold to a more natural subtle look. There are many different hair colours and brands to use.
It is most likely you may have concerns whether you should go ahead because of this hair trend downside. With the horror stories of hair falling out and breakages, you may want to reconsider colouring your hair. However, you should know that colouring your hair the right way would save from any hair ‘disaster’.
Here are 5 things to know before colouring your hair:
1. Go to a professional
If you are colouring your hair for the first time you should definitely go to a professional. A professional hair stylist will be able to consult with you on what colour blends well with your skin tone. Allow the professional do a strand test for this is the best way to ensure you are not allergic to the products and your hair gets the desired results.
2. Use hydrogen peroxide
If you are using a permanent hair colour you have to lift the hair using a hydrogen peroxide (developer). This process raises or opens up the cuticle layer of the hair to allow the color molecules to penetrate the cortex depositing the colour which could damage the hair if not done properly. If you use the wrong level of peroxide or if you constantly change your hair colour (over-processing) this damages to your hair.
3. Talk to your stylist
It is best to consult with your hair stylist about your options. If your hair is damaged, wait until your hair is in better condition or until the colour grows out. If you don’t like the colour of your hair, talk to your stylist about a colour corrective service.
4. You can colour and highlight hair together
As long as your hair is in good condition, you can colour your hair and then add highlights.
5. Don’t shampoo your hair
After you colour your hair, wait at least 24 hours before shampooing your hair, 48 hours is more recommended. Also try and limit your washing to 3 times a week, especially if you have a more intense color like, red.
