All human relationships are solidified with good communication. There cannot be healthy communication without active listening. There is a big difference between listening and hearing. In today’s world, everyone seems to be in a rush to talk or be heard without listening.
To make headway especially in one’s career, good listening skills are required. Bad listening skills, on the other hand, tarnish a person’s image, intelligence, and reputation. It is impossible to carry on a conversation without actively listening. Here is how to be a good listener:
1. Make eye contact
This builds confidence and trust. People only confide and do business with those they trust and like. Making eye contact is professional. It shows genuine interest and enthusiasm for what the other person has to say.
2. Smile
A smile lets the other person know he/she is welcomed and accepted. A frown is a big turn-off but a smile breaks the ice and allows the conversation to flow easily.
3. Paraphrase what is said
To allow the points sink in, paraphrase what you heard occasionally. It sends a signal to the person speaking that you are paying attention and not just wondering in your thoughts.
4. Ask relevant questions
If you are unclear about anything stated, ask questions for clarity. It gives you a better understanding of the discussion.
5. Take notes
This is helpful especially during meetings. You should jot the key takeaways and every other important information. Remember the shortest pencil is longer than the biggest memory.
6. Be present
Give the speaker your full attention. You should pay attention to your body language. Also, reflect the speaker’s emotions. Don’t think of your reply to the speaker. Most times people are focused on how to respond to the speakers that they don’t pay attention to what is being said.
7. Practice
Like everything that turns out to be great, you need to practice your listening skills. If you have poor listening skills, make conscious efforts to listen to people daily.
