In preparation for the Abia North senatorial district election rerun fixed for the 5th of March 2016, security agencies in Abia state, comprising the Police, Army, S.S, Civil Defence, Road Safety, among others have called on politicians to play according to the rules of the game, saying no individual or group of persons would be allowed to truncate the electoral process in the forth-coming election rerun in the state
The Abia State commissioner of Police ,Joshak Habila,who made the disclosure in Umuahia ,the Abia state capital during all political parties stakeholders meeting with the security agencies ,appealed to politicians to allow people to make their choice,noting that it is God that gives power.
He decried the level of desperation ,implored by the politicians to win election ,urging them to see political position as a call for service ,hence should not be desperate towards grabbing power.
“We should allow people to make their choice ,my interest is to ensure that the right thing is done ,so anybody caught in illegality ,the consequences will be unpalatable to the person .It is not going to be business as usual,gone are those days when security officers will allow themselves to be compromised”
The police commissioner noted that ,the stakeholders meeting became imperative in view of the hate languages observed during the electioneering process by the candidates involved, adding that over 5000 security men would be deployed for the exercise.
Addressing the journalists at the event,the Transition Chairman of ,Arochukwu L.G.A,Chief Onny Igbokwe,described the interaction as a welcome development, saying he would tell his people the decisions of the security agencies in the state. “I am going to pass the message to my people and I am appealing to the security officers to match their words with actions”
Some of the people who were in attendance at the event include the GOC Navy, Owerrinta, the Abia state DSS commandant, the Abia state commandant of Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corp, the Abia state commandant of Road safety, the Abia state commandant of prisons, the commandant of Abia state vigilante group, the state secretary of PDP, Hon.Chief Ogbuka Uchechi, the state chairman of APGA, Rev.Ehiemere Augustine,Traditional Rulers among others.
