You have to be living under a rock if you’re oblivious of the current trending news on Serena Williams. Well, basically, she lost the US Open Final to Naomi Osaka who became the first player representing Japan to win a major singles title. But the win isn’t as straightforward as it should be; Osaka didn’t win by merit, but by sheer luck. This isn’t an attempt at disregarding her efforts or how good she is, because she can definitely hold her own; however, in this case, she reaped the rewards of Serena’s tantrum.
Serena lost points for receiving coaching from her coach Patrick Mouratoglou – which she claimed she didn’t see – and for smashing her racquet. This didn’t go well with the tennis legend and she meted her frustration at the umpire whom she labelled a thief and demanded an apology from. Of course, breaking the rules by verbally abusing the umpire attracts consequences which Serena paid for by losing the game.

In a briefing afterwards, Serena called the reaction of the umpire as sexist and claimed her male counterparts have done worse but let off without being punished as severely.

Opinions are split on this as not everyone agrees with her actions, while others are in full and utter support of the athlete.

(2/2) When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he’s “outspoken” & and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.
