Love it or hate it, fringes are back! Good news to those who didn’t get their fringe on previously, the bandwagon just made a stop in 2014, so hop on. Even though fringes are mostly associated with rock and roll kind of fashion, this trend has left the backs of rock stars and lovers and has made its way into mainstream fashion. Recently on the runway, designers like Versace, Calvin Klein, Mui Mui, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Catherine Malandrino to mention a few rolled out their fringe inspired designs, from subtle minimalism to over-the-top maximal-ism. Everyone including celebrities like: Kim Kardashian, Kate Moss, Alexandra Ambrosio are also catching the fringe fever and endorsing this bohemian and edgy trend.
This trend isn’t just a rave in the West at the moment; in Africa (Nigeria), the first lady of Made Men Music Group (MMMG), Emma Nyra, donned a white and black dress with fringe details to the Vodafone Ghana music award – Aha! I guess someone got the fringe memo. Honestly though, the versatility of this trend amazes me because it can be incorporated into any and very fashion item; earrings, necklaces, bags, shoes, jackets, bags, pants, tops, dresses, bikinis, belts… I could go on and on and on with the list; it’s unending. This is one of those ‘self-statement’ trends that speak volumes effortlessly. With a trend like this, there are only two things that could happen; you either get it right or you get it awfully wrong, no in-betweens. It’s a tricky one, but don’t shy away just yet

I know the fun in being a rebel when it comes to fashion rules, but in this case, rules are very NECESSARY and two rules apply:
I have often emphasized the importance of personal style because without it you literarily have no fashion identity. No matter what trend you key into, your PS is your style compass that points you in the right direction and prevents you from getting lost or confused in the sea of trends. When picking out an outfit or accessory with fringes, choose pieces that fit your style and you are comfortable in. Remember, fringes aren’t only on clothes, so if you’re on the conservative side, you can opt for necklaces, earrings, scarf’s, bags or shoes, and keep the rest of your outfit simple.
There is something like being overly-fringed-out. This is a situation where you take every fringed item in your wardrobe and wear them all at the same. I’m not exactly sure what you would end up looking like, but I’m definitely sure you will have heads turning and eyes rolling for the wrong reason. It is advisable to stick to one fringed piece at a time, even though you are edgy and eccentric. For a day look, stick to causal fringed pieces like a top or a jacket while for a night out, jazz up your look with an over-the-top dress or a skirt, but always remember to keep every other thing simple.
Love it or hate it, fringes are the new must-haves for any trend lover!
