Would you consider hiring a professional, or ask a favour of a friend to be the Master of Ceremonies on duty at your wedding? Whichever your choice, the role of the wedding MC can never be overlooked. He/She will ensure the smooth and timely running of the day.
The Master of Ceremonies (MC) at a wedding reception is the point person and with the microphone in hand, the loudest person in the room. His/her job is to guide the guests and inform the wedding party of what’s happening and what they can expect to occur in the near future. Most times, the master of ceremony will use the sound equipment of the bands’ or the DJ at the reception to make their announcements.
It is the duty of the MC to announce the order of formal photographs to be taken. He/she goes ahead to request that relevant guests are present at the correct time. Following photographs, the MC will then announce that the wedding breakfast is to be served, and if a receiving line is taking place the person will orchestrate that with the help of the ushers.
Once all guests are seated, the MC will announce the entrance of the new Mr & Mrs, and lead a round of applause. For buffet-style dinners, to keep order, the MC will let each table know when they can proceed to the buffet line.
Once dinner has been served to all, the MC, in whatever order has been requested, will announce the tossing of the bouquet, introduce those who will be making a speech, and then the cutting of the cake. Every wedding reception is different and each couple may make specific requests as to what they’d like announced or what order they’d like things to occur.
The Master of Ceremonies might be asked non-wedding related questions, so be prepared to answer questions such as where the restrooms are, where the gift table is and every other.
