Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said that his administration would continue to sustain the legacies of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Governor Amosun stated this, recently, while speaking at the 2016 Obafemi Awolowo Birthday Commemorative Symposium held at the Ikenne residence of the late Awolowo.
While eulogising the visionary leadership of the former Premier of the Western Region, Governor Amosun said the late Awolowo evolved a template and benchmark for good governance in the country which, for several decades after his death, has remained very relevant.
Also speaking at the same event, Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, promised that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, will continue to strive to meet the expectations of Nigerians in spite of the prevailing socioeconomic challenges.
Mallam El-Rufai reaffirmed the determination of the APC-led government to deliver on its campaign promises to Nigerians.
The governor stressed the need for public office holders to do whatever was necessary to better the lives of their people as exemplified by the leadership style of the late Awolowo rather than embarking on projects that may not necessarily be beneficial for the masses.
Mallam El-Rufai described the late Chief Awolowo as a progressive leader whose free education policy and other programmes remain a reference point for the nation.
In a lecture titled, “Awo, then and now: Politics, economics and education,” Professor Segun Gbadegesin, the guest speaker at the event, advised government at all levels to adopt the ideals of free education, true federalism and good governance of the former Premier of the defunct Western region.
Professor Gbadegesin expressed worry over the failure rate of students in public examinations as well as the increasing incidences of examination malpractices which he attributed to poor education policy implementation.
Speaking earlier, the chairperson, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu explained that the symposium was organised to proffer solutions to some of the challenges confronting the nation.
