Queensonia Uzosike Chinwenwa is a dedicated professional in the field of behavioural and speech therapy. In this field, Queensonia upholds integrity, demonstrating patience, care, love, and tolerance, especially toward special needs children. Her job is not just a duty, but a calling to protect and support them.
Her career journey however began in the media broadcasting industry. She underwent Industrial Training at NTA Channel 5 in Abuja, and excelled in the newsroom department, working as a news anchor in Igbo, reporting on the stock market, and crafting news stories. Later, during her NYSC at Kerbing TV, she continued her career as a news anchor, monitored news content, and produced and hosted her programme called “Me & You.” From 2012, she was at AIT, working in various positions including as a programme officer where she ensured quality and smooth programme delivery to viewers.
In 2019, Queensonia embarked on a new and rewarding career path when she joined Our Lady of Guadalupe Health Foundation and Autism Centre as a behavioural and speech therapist. This decision marked a significant turning point in her life, as she underwent extensive training and earned over 60 certifications to help her support special needs children. Her role involves assessing patient conditions, encouraging positive behaviours, minimizing negative habits, monitoring progress, and creating individualized plans to enhance their lives. Working with special needs children demands patience, empathy, and a commitment to treating disabilities as a natural aspect of life. Queensonia fosters friendships between non-disabled and disabled kids, promotes decision-making and independence, and offers unwavering support.
Queensonia’s journey was shaped by her mother’s initial hopes of becoming a nurse or a lawyer. Despite her talents in both arts and sciences, she harboured diverse ambitions, including becoming a fashion designer, musician, and broadcaster. Her early fascination with TV presenters led her to mimic their reading styles, even using a makeshift teleprompter. She honed her fashion skills by sewing and showcased her musical talent by winning the best recorder player of the year in SS1. Instead of studying law, as her family wished, she pursued a degree in mass communication at Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) and later earned a master’s degree in the same field after her youth service.
If Queensonia could advise her younger self, she’d encourage herself to embrace music fully and refine her sewing skills. She learned from her journey that conquering fears is essential for success and relishes challenging naysayers. Her experiences, including working with special needs children, keep her determined to seek better opportunities and ways to make the world a better place.
Balancing her responsibilities as a mother of three boys and a loving wife, she manages her time with precision, dedicating equal time to work and family. Her workday involves therapy sessions with clients, and she follows an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) for each client, ensuring they receive personalised care.
Queensonia envisions a future where special needs children receive inclusive education without discrimination. Early intervention is crucial from her perspective. As a disability support worker, she offers more than just basic care, providing companionship and emotional support. Queensonia Uzosike Chinwenwa’s empathy and dedication to inclusivity make her a true Woman Crush Wednesday, and we celebrate her at Pride Magazine Nigeria.
